Facebook and RCom Joins Hand to Provide Free Internet in India

The world’s most famous social networking website, Facebook had just launched Internet.org in India on Tuesday. But you must be on reliance network to use internet.org and to use it for free you must need a reliance SIM card. This free service which gives people access to free basic internet services for health, education, communication and jobs is currently available in six Indian states: Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala and Telangana.

Reliance Communication (RCom) customers in India can access these services on internet.org Android app, and from the start screen of the Opera Mini mobile web browser, and using the Android app UC Browser for Internet.org. The services will be available in English, Hindi, , Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati. The website provides free access to various popular websites and services with zero data charges across both 2G and 3G network.

Facebook has ruled out internet.org for more than 150 million people in Africa and Latin America and nearly 6 million people are connected by this service.

“The future of the world economy is a knowledge economy — the Internet, its backbone.”

Not only is it providing free internet, Internet.org is also supporting a ‘Innovation Challenge’ for those who are working to make the internet more relevant to women, students, farmers and migrant workers in India.

The challenge is to encourage the web development companies in India to develop apps, websites and online services that provide real value to the people of India.
